Persephone, Queen of Hades

This is a doll of Persephone, queen of the Underworld. She is the daughter of Demeter and the wife of Hades. According to legend, Hades fell in love with Persephone after seeing her picking flowers in a meadow. He abducted her and took her to his realm, intending to make her his queen. When Demeter demanded her daughter back, he returned her, but only after she had eaten six seeds from a pomegranate. Because she ate food from the Underworld, she would not be allowed to leave. To satisfy everyone, Zeus decreed that Persephone must spend six months of the year with Hades, and may return to Demeter for the remainder of the year. It is because of this arrangement that the Greeks believed we had the changing of the seasons.
